What is TOPIK?
TOPIK stands for “Test of Proficiency in Korean.”
This Korean language test is offered multiple times a year for non-native speakers of Korean to test their Korean language skills, whatever their level and experience may be.
TOPIK is administered by the National Institute for International Education, or NIIED for short, a branch of the South Korean Ministry of Education.
Korean Proficiency Test
TOPIK is a Korean proficiency test and is especially popular among foreigners wishing to find professional employment in companies in Korea, foreigners who want a residency visa in Korea, bring the family to Korea, and for other equivalent reasons.
This Korean Test measures proficiency in the Korean Language, so foreigners or Korean language learners who need to validate their proficiency in the language may want to consider taking this test.
If you’re an international student, you can even use your TOPIK grades to get into a university in South Korea.
TOPIK Levels
The old format of the TOPIK had three different levels of TOPIK scores: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The Korean test consisted of four sections: grammar and vocabulary, listening, reading, and writing. This was the format of TOPIK until 2014.
A new format has been in effect from the 35th TOPIK test onward, with the exam conducted in July 2014. There are now only two levels (TOPIK I and TOPIK II) and six sublevels (TOPIK Level 1 – 6). The new TOPIK Levels have different coverages. You are evaluated based on the number of points earned.
After the test, you will receive a level between 1 and 6 based on your total score on the test.
TOPIK I
TOPIK I the test consists of only reading and listening. To reach a higher level in TOPIK I, you are expected to understand simple daily conversations (both formal and informal), formulate simple sentences, and be able to manage some public tasks in your everyday life in Korean.

TOPIK II
To get the highest score in TOPIK II, you are expected to be at a level where you can function in Korean in professional tasks and research environments, comprehend a wide range of ideas and expressions, and be able to understand complex topics such as economics, politics, or issues related to the professional field.
TOPIK Level 3
TOPIK Level 3 is under TOPIK II. TOPIK level 3 until 6 is the equivalent of “advanced” to “intermediate” in the old format. The passing mark for this sublevel is 120 points.
At this level, you are expected to be able to socialize without difficulty, use public facilities, and use spoken and written language correctly.
TOPIK Level 4
TOPIK Level 4 is under TOPIK II. To pass this, you should have a score of over 150 points. At this higher level, you are expected to understand basic news reports and newspapers. You should also be able to use the language to carry out some form of work.
TOPIK Level 5

TOPIK Level 6
TOPIK Level 6 is under TOPIK II. The passing mark for this level is over 230 points. Apart from being able to use the language for a variety of complex scenarios like in Level 5, passers should have no difficulty in carrying out their professional and daily tasks or communicating meaning.
How long is the TOPIK exam?

TOPIK Results
It would take test takers around a few weeks from taking the exam to receive their grades. Test results announcements are usually through the TOPIK website.
Your score for each TOPIK test is valid for two years.
If you plan to take the TOPIK and use the Korean language test for enrollment, it is essential to schedule the exam based on when you need to have its scores in hand!
TOPIK Test Dates
For 2022, the Korean government has released several dates on when the registration will be. If you plan to take the test in your country, you should contact the Korean embassy or those who offer testing assistance services in your area for the exact registration dates and other information.
However, if you plan to take the test in Korea, here’s a sample of the test schedules:
Date of Examination – Registration
TOPIK 2022
April – February 8,2022 – February 14, 2022
May – March 8, 2022 – March 14, 2022
July – May 24, 2022 – May 30, 2022
October – August 2, 2022 – August 8, 2022
November – September 6, 2022 – September 13, 2022
You can go to this site for the most updated test schedules.
TOPIK Price
The price will depend on where you’re going to take the test and at what level. In Korea, TOPIK I can cost around KRW40,000, while TOPIK II can cost you around KRW 55,000. You might want to visit affiliated institutions to get the registration fee for your country.
How to prepare for the TOPIK test?
Typically the preparation directly for TOPIK is self-study and practice. Of course, attending a Korean language class, in general, will always help improve your skill and proficiency.
Korean Immigration Integration Program (KIIP)
In South Korea, you can enroll in a language school or the KIIP (Korean immigration integration program).
KIIP is free to attend, but you will have to take a separate placement exam; most students first take the test and then register for the KIIP program using their average score to be assigned to the proper level.
So a full-fledged Korean language school may prove to be a better tool, although KIIP is not as intensive in its course load if you do not have the time to enroll in a language school.
Online Language Course
For other countries outside of Korea, you may seek out a physical class, or you may utilize many resources online to practice! For example, our 90 Day Korean Membership program can be of great help while preparing to take TOPIK.
The 90 Day Korean Membership program is not a prep course for the TOPIK test, but you can learn the fundamentals you’ll need to know for TOPIK. You can access the site wherever through a simple browser or by downloading our application.
You can learn Korean in a fun, easy, and stress-free way. This program is best for all levels, from beginners to intermediate or advanced learners.
Books and TOPIK Practice Tests
However, if you are looking to focus your studies specifically on TOPIK, your best bet is to search for books or a website with content dedicated to this exam. These items will cover the topics that you may come across while taking TOPIK.
A test book is a guide with mock exams based on the exact way the exam is constructed and will help you measure your preparedness for the exam.
Also, you may be able to find a site online with old examinations for you to print and try out; some of them are also based on actual exams! These items guarantee results.
What are the best books to prepare for TOPIK?
The test can be tricky and will test you on more academic items than what you’d need to know in your daily life. Hence, you may want to use some TOPIK-specific materials, books, and practice tests during your preparation for the test, even if you are already attending a Korean class.
TOPIK Practice Test
A TOPIK practice test can simulate an actual TOPIK test-taking experience. It’s best to look for sample examinations that are the most accurate representations of the genuine TOPIK exam.
You can study the old examinations (and their answers) here.
TOPIK Books
These books for TOPIK I and TOPIK II are some of the most comprehensive books with great content that you can find. In addition to books and a good TOPIK guide, you may want to listen to the Korean language as much as possible through as many different options possible, from dramas to news, to prepare for the test.
Should you take TOPIK?
It is up to you and your goals whether you want to take TOPIK! It is available for any Korean learner, even those living outside of Korea, to take. There are also multiple test dates, so the schedule is not an issue. More importantly, it’s also not that expensive.

I started learning Korean only a few months back as I was having problem communicating with my professor and colleagues in my lab. Later I got to know about TOPIK and though I didn't require it, I decided to take the test to assess my learning. I got TOPIK GUIDE course 1 month before the test and I can say that it helped me a lot. Finally I passed level 2 with really good score.ShirleyPost-Doc Researcher at Chonnam University
TOPIK GUIDE courses are really great for TOPIK test preparation. I am one of those people who prefer video tutorials over guide books. So I bought their course instead of buying TOPIK preparation books. The study material is good and they are very supportive and always answered my questions promptly.Mikegraduate student, busan national university
Highly Recommend their beginner Korean language Course. Easy to Understand, Very Well Organized. The course may feel a bit dry at times but if learning Korean language properly is your main objective, it really delivers what it promises.DavidEnglish Language teacher in seoul
I took your grammar crash course. It was amazing. The lessons were to the point and I can say my understanding of those concepts is much better now. I have been practicing with your mock tests and I feel confident that I can pass TOPIK level 2 easily now.Lisamarketing manager at a Korean COMPANY

How to prepare for the TOPIK test?
What is TOPIK?
The Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK exam) is a standardized examination evaluating Korean language skills.
The Korea Research Foundation started in 1997 to verify the strength of the candidates’ Korean language fluency.
This exam is only for non-native speakers.
The types of TOPIK test
There are three. The standard TOPIK (S-TOPIK) is the most popular one. However, the candidates have two more alternatives — B-TOPIK (Business TOPIK) and EPS-TOPIK (Employment Permit System).
In addition, there is another one — the KLAT test, which I’ll cover in the next article.
These two examinations serve specific purposes, like working in South Korea as a professional or migrant laborer. I’ll cover more on these later.
Who conducts the exam?
The National Institute for International Education (NIIED — 국립국제교육원) has administered the TOPIK globally since 2011.
NIIED, part of the government, with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology of the Republic of Korea, manages different aspects of the test.
Recognition of TOPIK worldwide
TOPIK (한국어능력시험), i.e., Test of Proficiency in Korean, is the most popular Korean ability exam across the globe.
From a comfortable stay in South Korea to jobs requiring the Korean language, TOPIK is an excellent value-add to your profile.
Nearly all organizations, public and private universities, and government bodies accept and trust TOPIK certification.
Should you take the TOPIK Test?
There are several advantages associated with TOPIK. This is an international exam designed to help non-natives to certify their talents.
It is useful for foreigners who want to work or study in South Korea but do not speak Korean as their mother tongue.
Korean knowledge alone might not show your language skills to your potential employers.
Most companies expect documentary evidence before the interview. In that scenario, TOPIK credentials can help you cross the initial hurdles of short-listing.
This boosts scholarship opportunities, visas, and permanent residency in South Korea.
Plus, this confirms your current understanding and motivates you to improve more. That raises your confidence.
All About Test of Proficiency in Korean
The TOPIK (한국어능력시험) is the most sought-after Korean ability test for non-native Korean populations and diasporas.
Let’s find out everything about it.
Eligibility criteria & who can take it?
There are no special prerequisite qualifications and guidelines.
Any foreigner who does not speak Korean as a native or overseas Korean can appear for the TOPIK to check the current competency level.
There is no minimum age limit either.
What are the various levels?
It has two broad categories — levels 1 and 2- subdivided into six distinct groups.
TOPIK I is the Korean test for beginners and comprises two sublevels (levels 1 and 2).
TOPIK II includes intermediate and advanced levels and has four sublevels (3, 4, 5, and 6).
Syllabus for different levels
Level 1 covers elementary Korean, like basic linguistic terminology, simple sentence formations, and roughly 800 vocabularies.
Conversely, level 6, i.e., the most difficult one, is for those who have achieved a near-native level of fluency.
The below-mentioned are linguistic competence for individual levels you need to prepare.
Korea.go.kr
You can also check the last few years’ question papers and sample materials to get an overall idea.
TOPIK test structure
TOPIK test covers the Korean language in listening, reading, and writing skills on different levels: beginner, intermediate, or advanced.
The TOPIK-I duration is 100 minutes and contains a reading (60 minutes) and a listening comprehension part (40 minutes).
The TOPIK– II comprises a 3-hour exam with a brief break. It has 3 sections — writing (70 minutes), reading, and listening (110 minutes combined).
Question formats
The format is primarily an MCQ (multiple-choice questions). However, the written test requiring brief answers is at the TOPIK II level.
TOPIK I (Level 1-2) has 70 MCQs, including 30 in listening and 40 in reading. The total mark is 200, and the test duration is 100 Minutes.
TOPIK II (Level 3-6) has 104 questions, including 50 MCQ in listening, 50 MCQ in reading, and 4 short answers. The total mark is 300, and the test time is 180 Minutes.
Passing marks for TOPIK
The passing score varies as per the level.
For levels 1 and 2, you need 80 and 140 out of 200. In contrast, it ranges between 120 and 230 for levels 3 to 6.
You can check the table below for the score you need to earn for your target levels.
TOPIK LevelsPassing Points (Range)Level 180 – 139Level 2140 – 200Level 3120 – 149Level 4150 – 189Level 5190 – 229Level 6230 – 3000 to 79 fails for TOPIK- I, whereas for TOPIK II, 0 to 119 fails.
How to register for the TOPIK exam?
The Embassy of the Republic of Korea operates the TOPIK test in most countries.
The King Sejong Institute, the Korean Cultural Center, and other collaborated institutions also facilitate and take the applications.
In Korea, you can register online on the official website TOPIK.go.kr. Visit the site, choose the level and test center, and make the payment.
The documents required for application may differ.
So, you can get in touch with the nearby center. You usually need two passport-sized photos, an identity card, and the registration fee.
What is the validity of TOPIK?
TOPIK is valid for 2 years only from the date of test result notifications.
Once this expires, you are required to retake it to count officially.
2024 TOPIK exam dates
There are three types of TOPIK tests — PBT (paper-based test), Speaking, and IBT (Internet-based test).
They hold the examination six times a year, mainly on Sunday, with no scheduled date changes.
January, May, and November are only for Korea, whereas April, July, and October are for all countries, including South Korea.

How to prepare for the TOPIK test?
Many consider Korean one of the most challenging languages to learn. The USA’s Foreign Service Institute (FSI) has added it to category IV (Super-hard languages).
The good news is that there are ways to make is more straightforward.
There are abundant books, teachers, audio and video tutoring, language apps, websites, and online lessons. The list goes on.
The bad news is that you still have to dedicate time to study.
No magic wands will quickly make all those vocabularies, connectors, pronunciation, varying verb ending forms, and honorifics appear in your brain.
First, making a proper study plan and finding a teacher or enrolling in any language school as an experienced tutor will enhance your progress more efficiently.
Don’t get stuck. Be consistent with your learning approaches. You can also watch some movies to learn Korean.
You can try some practice tests available online to check your current abilities.
You can also attempt plenty of previous year’s question papers and samples to help you out with the goal.
Of course, it requires lots of hard work and perseverance, but that’s the route it is with most worthwhile studies.
The TOPIK test certification can add meaningful value to your C.V. and assist you with immense success in your personal and professional endeavors!

They conduct the TOPIK test 3 times a year outside Korea, but usually twice in any country.
In India, they have already offered the test in April and July this year, so they may not conduct it 3rd time in Oct. So most likely, the next test in India would be in April 2023. Hope it’s clear now.

There are a total of 6 levels — TOPIK 1 (level 1 and 2), and TOPIK II (level 3, 4, 5, and 6). You can only take a particular level as all tests for various levels are conducted on the same day. There is a test center in Islamabad as per official site topik.go.kr/TWGUID/TWGUID0050.do

Korean-language test for nonnative speakers in South Korea
"TOPIK" redirects here. For the Armenian food, see Topik. For topics, see Topic.
Test of Proficiency in KoreanAcronymTOPIKTypeInternet-based or paper-based standardized test.Developer / administratorNational Institute for International EducationKnowledge / skills testedReading, listening, speaking and writing of the Korean language.Year started1997; 27 years ago (1997)LanguagesKoreanWebsitetopik.go.kr
The Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK; Korean: 한국어능력시험) is a test to measure the Korean language proficiency of non-native speakers in South Korea. This examination system was introduced by the South Korean government in 1997 and conducted by a branch of the Ministry of Education of the country.
The test is offered six times annually (Jan, Apr, May, Jul, Oct, Nov) within South Korea and less often to people studying Korean in other countries. The test is for individuals whose first language is not Korean and is taken by overseas ethnic Koreans, those wishing to study at a Korean university, and for those who want to be employed at Korean companies in and outside of Korea. Since 2011, TOPIK is administered by the National Institute for International Education [ko] (국립국제교육원, NIIED), a branch of the Ministry of Education in South Korea.
History[edit]
The test was first administered in 1997 and taken by 2,274 people. Initially the test was held only once a year.[1] In 2009, 180,000 people took the test.[2] The Korean government introduced a law in 2007 that required Chinese workers of Korean descent with no relatives in Korea to attain more than 200 points (out of 400) in the Business TOPIK (B-TOPIK) so they could be entered into a lottery for work visa.[3][4]
From 1997 to 1998, TOPIK was administered by Korea Research Foundation (KRF). From 1999 to 2010, TOPIK was administered by the Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation [ko] (KICE).[5]
In 2012, more than 150,000 candidates took the TOPIK, and the total number of people who have taken the test since its date of inception surpassed 1 million.[6]

Format[edit]
Old format[edit]
In previous years, the test was divided into four parts: vocabulary and grammar, writing, listening, and reading. Two versions of the test were offered: the Standard (S)-TOPIK and the Business (B)-TOPIK. There were three different levels of S-TOPIK: beginner (초급), intermediate (중급), and advanced (고급). Depending on the average score and minimum marks in each section it was possible to obtain grades 1-2 in beginner, 3-4 in intermediate and 5-6 in advanced S-TOPIK. In B-TOPIK the scores in each section (out of 100) were added together to give a score out of 400.[8]
New format[edit]
A new format of the TOPIK took effect from the 35th TOPIK test, held on 20 July 2014. Instead of the original ternary (Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced) classification, there are now only two test levels – TOPIK I and TOPIK II. TOPIK I has sub-levels 1 and 2, whereas TOPIK II has four sub-levels from 3 to 6. Another important change is that now the TOPIK I has only two sections – Reading and Listening, instead of four sections in the old format. TOPIK II has three sections – Reading, Listening and Writing.[9]
Validity[edit]
The test results are valid for two years after the announcement of examination results.[9]
Grading[edit]
TOPIK I is the basic level test containing two obtainable grades, while TOPIK II is the combined intermediate/advanced level with four obtainable grades. The evaluation is based on the total number of points earned.

How to Use Manuscript Paper
*This is an original translation of material published on the official TOPIK website in 2018.
1. Write one letter per square of manuscript paper.
2.When starting a sentence and changing paragraphs for the first time, leave the first square of the line empty and write from the second square.
3.Within the first paragraph, do not leave a square empty except at the beginning of a line. If there is no empty square at the end of a line, the first square of the next line is written without separating the lines. (It does not matter whether or not there is a “v” sign indicating separate writing.)
4.Write two Arabic numerals per square.
5.In principle, one symbol should be written in each square. However, dashes (ー) and abbreviations (……) should be written in two squares.
6. Question mark (?) and exclamation mark (!) are followed by an empty square. However, a space is not required after a closing mark (.), a comma (,), or a colon (:).
7. If a letter occupies the last square and there is no square for a symbol, the symbol is written with the letter in the last square.
